Every day in an Acton studio ends with a circle. A moment of stillness, reflection, and often, something powerful: A learner stands and says,“I saw [name] help someone who was upset. I’d call that compassion.” And the whole tribe claps in unison.
It’s called a Character Callout. A small ritual with a big purpose.
At first glance, it may seem like a simple thank-you or a feel-good moment. But underneath, something much deeper is happening.
A Culture of Gratitude and Recognition
In a world where many feel overlooked, Character Callouts create a culture of being seen. Every learner, no matter how quiet, has the chance to be recognized for who they are becoming.
Practicing Emotional Intelligence
Each callout teaches learners to observe, name, and appreciate the virtues in others. It builds empathy, awareness, and the habit of gratitude. These are soft skills that shape strong humans.
Identity Formation Through Virtue
When a peer calls you brave, kind, or honest, you start to believe it. Over time, these words aren’t just compliments. They become part of how a young hero sees themselves.
Reinforcing Habits That Build Character
What we notice grows. The more learners look for courage, helpfulness, or grit in others, the more they begin to live those values themselves.
There’s no point system. No teacher-led praise. Just truth spoken by peers, forming a culture of mutual respect and shared growth.
Because at Acton, character isn’t taught from a textbook. It’s practiced daily.
"Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking."
H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
